A training programme was held for some selected personnel from the various facilities of the St John of God services in Ghana (St. John of God Hospital Asafo, St. John of God Clinic Amrahia and St. Joseph Hospital Koforidua) by trainers from Spain Dr Guillermo Martínez from ISGLOBAL Spain and Mrs. Christina K.T. Attia from Liberia.

The training programme which was on research work consisted of lectures, group discussions and exercises. The progrmme introduced participants to various concepts in research work and increased their depth of understanding and appreciation of the research field; some concepts in research work, such as informed consent, good clinical practice (GCP) and data generation and processing were applicable to the clinical work.

Participants were happy about the work shop and made the following recommendations:-

1.      More staff of the hospital should be given the opportunity to take part in training programmes of this kind

2.      It appears almost all training programmes of this kind for the staff of St. John of God Services are held at the Koforidua branch. Such programmes should be held on rotatory bases from one Centre to the other; with this approach more people and centers of the Group will benefit.

3.      Personnel in the various units in the Hospitals should be encouraged to research and find solutions to the various peculiar problems encountered in their work at the Hospital. This can better done by the Hospital sponsoring such research works.

On the last day of the programme participants from Asafo and Accra were taken on a tour of the various units of St Joseph Hospital.

Dr. Dominic Annor Mintah from Asafo acknowledged that the knowledge acquired from the programme will positively impart the clinical practices of the participants.

Present at the closing of the training workshop to grace the occasion were the Director of National Catholic Health Services in Ghana, the Provincial Superior and his Secretary.
